HER LIFE

Imani (Aviva Imuna) Fecu’s
legacy fuels our fight for justice, healing, and empowerment.

About: Imani /Aviva Imuna

A Legacy of Strength and Healing

Imani Fecu (Aviva Imuna) was a kind and gentle soul, a natural healer whose presence brought light, love, and comfort to those around her. She carried within her a rare ability to uplift others, inspiring hope, creativity, and resilience even in the face of hardship. To her family, she was the glue that held them together. To her community, she was a guiding light.

But behind her radiant spirit, Imani carried burdens no one her age should bear. In 2020, just two months before her 25th birthday, she found herself struggling with overwhelming pain and thoughts of ending her life. A survivor of multiple Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), she had fought courageously to heal, seeking help, reaching out to her doctor, and advocating for herself. Yet, despite her resilience, intelligence, and determination, the very systems meant to protect her failed her. Instead of receiving compassion and care, she was dismissed. And in that failure, her life was tragically cut short.

Imani’s struggles were not hers alone, they were shaped by systemic barriers that shadowed her from birth. With her mother incarcerated for 18 of her 24 years, Imani and her sister Nia, grew up without the stability, nurturing, and the protection every child needs to be safe. The carceral system not only took away her mother’s presence, but also fractured the foundation of her childhood, leaving wounds of generational trauma that would follow her into adulthood.

Imani’s Safehouse was born out of her story, her pain, her strength, her love, and her life. It exists to disrupt cycles of trauma and incarceration,  to demand accountability from systems that continue to fail survivors, and to ensure no woman is ever silenced, dismissed, or left behind.

Her legacy is one of compassion, resilience, and love. We celebrate her life, her spirit lives on—guiding this movement for justice, healing, and liberation of other girls and women.

WHY WE DO WHAT WE  DO?

Portrait of two Black women

At Imani’s Safehouse Inc., our mission is deeply rooted in the lived experiences of those impacted by incarceration, injustice, and systemic oppression. Imani's precious life and her legacy of seeking solutions to end cycles of violence and to heal serve as the foundation for our work.
The Problem:
For far too long, Black and other marginalized females, have endured the lasting consequences of mass incarceration, economic disenfranchisement, and social exclusion.

The Story:
Imani's journeys reflect the broader struggles of so many. From these experiences, Imani’s Safehouse Inc. was born, not just as an organization, but as a movement to disrupt systemic harm and create pathways to liberation for girls and women.

The Solution:
Through Know Your Rights, Career Development, and Community Connects, we provide legal education, professional empowerment, and community-driven support, bridging the gap between struggle and opportunity. We believe that healing, transformation, and justice are possible when those most affected are at the forefront of the solutions.

This is why we do what we do, justice is not just an ideal but a human right.
